Description

School of Rock New Canaan provides both in-person and online music lessons for students of all ages. Our programs, camps and workshops for toddlers, kids, teens and adults make learning to play music fun and create great communities of musicians. School of Rock is the leader in performance-based music education. We combine one-on-one drum, bass, keyboard, vocal, and guitar lessons with group practices. Students learn to play music from day one and put on live performances at local venues. Our experienced instructors are local musicians themselves who combine the performance-based School of Rock Method and programs with individual music lessons to get results for your student.

  • Tyler Bernhardt

    Music Director

    Tyler Bernhardt was born and raised in Fairfield, Connecticut. At an early age, he began teaching himself guitar, bass, piano, and drums, which led to his compositional career. In high school, he co-founded an a capella group called Close Harmony, a staple of Fairfield's musical education system. Upon his high school graduation, Tyler released an original 5-song EP with fellow musician Darian Cunning. Following high school, Tyler was offered a full scholarship to study Jazz Vocal Performance at the University of Miami's Frost School of Music. There, Tyler became part of the prestigious Jazz Vocal Ensemble 1. In addition, he was recruited to the elite Downbeat award-winning jazz vocal group, Extensions. In 2010, Tyler signed with Forward Motion Records, a South Florida-based indie label, run by Dreaming In Stereo's own Fernando Perdomo. A few months later, Tyler released a full-length album called What Is This , which he produced with classmate Luke Moellman. In 2011, Tyler's song 'Happiness In History' was awarded first place in the Indaba-Jango Airplay Opportunity contest. Tyler's original music blends elements of indie-pop, Americana,and rock into a genre all its own. He has performed at venues such as the Van Dyke, Transit Lounge, the Stage, the Acoustic Café, and the Quick Center. His music is available on iTunes, Amazon, and many other online retailers.

  • Adam Cirillo

    General Manager

    Adam was born and raised in Derby, CT. His grandfather was an accomplished jazz drummer and pianist, and encouraged Adam to start making music at the age of 8. He started then taking drum lessons, and has been pursuing his love for music ever since. Adam took drum lessons at multiple music schools in CT, and from a number of teachers while he was growing up. He began to explore other instruments as well, and is self taught on piano, guitar, and bass. When he was 16, Adam joined a cover band called One Jack Move, and went on to play shows at Mohegan Sun, Mount Snow, Springfield College, CCSU, Toads Place, and many more. One Jack Move has been featured on Radio 104.1, 106.9 WCCC, and 99.1 WPLR. Adam is also currently involved in some original projects, in which he plays the drums and keyboard. Adam graduated from Sacred Heart University in 2011 with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration. He currently lives in Stratford, CT.

  • Carl Goding

    Drum Instructor

    Born in Norwalk, Carl grew up with music all around him. Driving the family crazy while incessantly drumming on anything he could find, Carl heard the band Rush and he was hooked for life. At age 16, Carl began taking lessons from Jim Mola (Tony Bennett, Good Morning America, the JVC Jazz Festival). Not being able to afford conventional lessons Carl began to roadie for Jim, and would be taught on a diner table after gigs. At the age of 17, Carl started the progressive metal band Arsinal that toured the Northeast. While in melodic progressive band Arcane Opera, he was featured on the Foundations Forum CD releases for two years straight with Ozzy, Megadeth, Black Sabbath, Pantera and others. Carl then started Bourne Wisdom, who recorded their debut CD in 1995 and shared the stage with the likes of King's X and Kansas. With the band Linc Haze, Carl and crew were the most sought after area band with their style of 'rapcore.' He is currently recording original music with the progressive rock band Scapeland. Carl remains one of the most sought after drummers in the area, performing consistently at venues like Mohegan Sun, Toads Place, and Marriott Times Square. You can see Carl in the area playing with Pimpinella (funk and dance), HEDTRIP (modern rock, alternative), Paul Lacano and the Cocktail Shakers (dance and swing), Soul Circus (reggae and RB), Bump (blues to today's dance) and original alternative rock band If Not For Dreaming. Carl resides in Bethel, CT with his wife and two kids who are also following in his musical footsteps.

  • Brian Fox

    Keyboard/Vocal Instructor

    Brian has spent well over half of his life submerged in music. Starting in 3rd grade, he picked up the tenor sax for the school band and ever since then something stuck. Pushing ahead a few years he purchased a guitar in 7th grade and started a few bands with local friends and musicians. Over the rest of his middle/high school career he would perform in many original bands spanning the music spectrum. From heavy metal to blues/jazz, he wanted to try it all.After high school, Brian set out for Los Angeles and the Musicians' Institute in W. Hollywood where he studied piano/keyboard and recording technology. After he returned home to CT in 2004, he and his band Mos Opus featuring Justin Howland, Will Earley, and himself started playing out live and really getting a feel for the music scene. In 2010 they released their second work, an EP entitled Anchors which displayed the band's musicianship and use of technology.Brian is excited to bring his passion for rock and on-stage experience to the School of Rock.

  • Matt Dempsey

    Guitar / Bass Instructor

    Matt Dempsey has been playing and writing music since he was able. He began his music career when he picked up alto sax in fourth grade, playing through high school and at the Rose Bowl.Dabbling in trumpet along the way, he would soon find the instrument that would capture his lifelong attention, the guitar. At fourteen Matt began private guitar lessons and quickly joined his first band. He would go on to be involved in a very wide range of musical styles including punk, metal, rock, jazz, blues, folk and reggae. Matt attended the University of New Haven and continued to study the guitar while gaining a B.S. in Music and Sound Recording.Along the way he picked up the bass and was involved in several projects including reggae, rock, and jazz groups.During this time Matt also began spreading the joy of music to others and found a love where he never expected he would, in teaching. Matt began teaching at various schools and music stores in 2006 and has never looked back. He also continues to play with various projects including his main band Cosmic Dust Bunnies , who have played throughout New England and continue to tour, write, and record.Recently, Matt has also traveled to The Collective School of Music in NYC to continue his education.Believing that we are all forever students, Matt feels strongly that to be a good educator one must be open and constantly learning.

  • Michael Miller

    Guitar / Bass Instructor

    Mike Miller grew up in the suburbs of Chicago where he started playing guitar at age 5. While in high school Mike began teaching guitar. After winning many school and local talent contests Mike started his formal training in Classical guitar and Music Education in college. He then relocated to Los Angeles where he was involved with several bands, music video projects and studio work as a rock guitarist. In L.A. he was able to meet and take instruction from many top musicians such as bassist Bunny Brunel (Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock) and guitarist Scott VanZen ( Kiss, Ken Tamplin). Later, Mike moved to Arizona after being invited to be the guest soloist for the San Marcos Symphony Orchestra. Mike's recent bands include Metal Elvis, Great Gig in the Sky, Unskinny Bop, and Casino Arizona Showstoppers. He has toured nationally and his bands have headlined venues such as The Marquee and Celebrity theaters in Phoenix as well as the Palace Theater and Wolf Den at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut. While performing at Mohegan Sun, Mike met his better half which prompted a move to Connecticut. Since then Mike has been busy teaching guitar and performing with local bands. Mike's current band is Sugarush, a Rock/Pop/Dance band that plays over 100 gigs a year.

  • Marlon Valenzuela

    Guitar/Bass Instructor

    Growing up, Marlon expressed a noticeable interest in playing music. He bought his first guitar in his early days of high school and eventually led him to joining his first band during junior year, playing original music at school events. In the following years, after graduating from Greenwich High School and continuing college in 2006, Marlon started playing in various cover bands and performing at local clubs, bars, and cafes. From 2009 up to the present day, he's been the lead guitarist for an up-and-coming local alternative rock band called Yaguarandí. Playing and recording original music, he's toured in various cities on the Eastern seaboard including Washington, D.C., New Jersey, New York City and locally in CT. Yaguarandí has been actively opening shows in the Eastern side of the US for various international rock bands including the 2010 Latin Grammys nominated Bohemia Suburbana from Guatemala. Actively educating himself and performing as an artist, Marlon brings energy and commitment to the School of Rock community.
